Academy of Fine Arts

The Academy of Fine Arts at the Department of Art and Material Culture of the TU Dortmund University is structured into two interconnected areas: Art Practice and Art Studies. This division ensures disciplinary rigor within each field while simultaneously fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

Cross-field exchange is promoted through joint projects, event offerings, shared teaching formats, and collaborative research initiatives. Within this framework, students engage with the foundational aspects of art practice and critically reflect on the content and methodologies of art history, visual studies, and educational theory.

Students develop the ability to work independently with artistic and technical media – an indispensable foundation for art practice. Moreover, they gain exemplary insights into crucial discourses of art history and visual studies, which support their disciplinary positioning and deepen their understanding of visual and historical analysis.

Through this integrative approach, students learn to establish meaningful connections between art history, visual studies, artistic, and educational perspectives.

Admission to the program requires the successful completion of an aptitude assessment.
