Art Practice
Art Practice is a process of research, inquiry, and creation – an open-ended process that allows for continuous exploration and discovery. It involves observation, reflection, and creative action. At the heart of our program is the belief that art offers unique ways of understanding and shaping the world. Through direct engagement with their surroundings and the transformation of experience into a material form, students are encouraged to develop independent and unconventional approaches to artistic expression.
Personal standards and aesthetic criteria emerge through a process of experimentation and dialogue. This involves experimenting with a variety of techniques, styles, and media, as well as engaging in discussions with peers and mentors to gain new insights and perspectives. Critical thinking, curiosity, and self-awareness are cultivated alongside technical and conceptual skills.
A solid foundation in materials and media is essential, and we encourage students to work with a diverse range of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, textiles, photography, performance, digital art, drawing, and printmaking – often in interdisciplinary ways. We support them in exploring artistic questions with perseverance, independence, and a tolerance for uncertainty.
Artistic thought and practice are intrinsically linked to the historical and contemporary contexts of art. Art does not exist in isolation. It is in constant conversation with history, theory, and the present. Our program fosters openness to diverse artistic forms and encourages students to reflect on and articulate their positions clearly and effectively. Art Practice, in this context, is both intuitive and intellectual, grounded in the processes of making, thinking, and speaking.
