Painting, Digital & Expanded Painting
Painting is among the oldest media humans have used to capture their view of the world. Contemporary art practice in painting is always rooted in a richly varied environment of art and media.
Studying painting today involves engaging with a vibrant environment shaped by various artistic styles and media. An expanded concept of painting presents exciting challenges and valuable opportunities for artistic curiosity and growth. From the very beginning of their studies, students are encouraged to develop a unique artistic stance. This process is enriched through critical dialogue with teachers and peers.
The curriculum features seminars on specific thematic topics, while colloquia and individual critiques promote reflection on the artistic work produced. These formats help students articulate, analyze, and assess their practice. Concepts and criteria are developed collaboratively, with active investigation of connections to current and historical discourses. Introductory seminars on painting techniques cover the fundamental materials of painting as well as various historical and contemporary methods.
The painting studio is open outside of class hours, offering space for independent work. Individual workstations, easels, and storage are available, along with an ample supply of materials — including various paint systems, stretcher frames, canvas, and paper. Each semester, permanent studio spaces are assigned, and excursions and short seminars regularly enrich the curriculum.
