MURAL EF50

Art students design walls

As part of the celebrations to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Technical University of Dortmund, painting students at the Institute of Art and Material Culture have artistically designed the exterior facades of the lecture halls in the Emil-Figge-Straße 50 building. The project was triggered by a suggestion from the company suggestion scheme (VIBA); Vice-President Diversity Management, Professor Barbara Welzel, subsequently initiated the project.

Steffen Mischke, Florian Moritz, Katja Mudraya and Ulvis Müller developed their own concept for the design under the direction of Professor Tillmann Damrau at the Department of Art and Art Studies.

The project was launched in October 2017. The students developed and discussed various site-specific designs during their weekly meetings. The artist and the three artists succeeded in bringing together their respective creative impulses and their different artistic positions for the project and making them fruitful.

The students ultimately submitted a total of 64 different designs, which were transferred to a photograph of the building for a final selection. In a multi-stage selection process, a joint design by Steffen Mischke, Florian Moritz, Katja Mudraya and Ulvis Müller was then chosen for implementation on site.

On Monday, June 6, 2018, at 11:45 a.m., the artist and the artists began their artistic work on the façades. Three weeks later, on Wednesday, June 25, 2018, at 11:30 a.m., the work was presented to the public by the Rector of TU Dortmund University, Professor Ursula Gather.

A publication in the series Dortmunder Schriften zur Kunst, catalogs and essays with texts by Alexandra Apfelbaum, Tillmann Damrau, and Barbara Welzel documents the project.
