Photography

What does it actually mean to engage with photography in an artistic context? This consideration quickly leads us to the question of the nature of the medium. How does photography differ from painting or film, for example? This question goes back to the beginnings of photography in the 19th century and is now topical again in view of the digitalization of the medium. This creates a fascinating field of tension that moves between autonomous image, reference to reality and the question of authenticity.

In this field of tension, it is crucial to develop a sensitive perception that focuses both on what happens in front of our eyes and reflects on what photography does in our minds.

Notes on teaching

But first, let's take a step back: the elementary characteristics of photography, such as the shortness or length of an exposure time, the use of sharpness and blurring and the effect of light, play a role in the course. Mastering the technical basics and formal criteria goes hand in hand with the resulting creative possibilities for realizing an image idea.

It is important to me to open up the spectrum as much as possible as I progress and to develop a more complex and conceptual approach to images based on the basic experience of working with photography.

In order to find and consolidate one's own artistic position, it is also essential to know the history and, above all, contemporary developments in photography. The discourse on this is clearly incorporated into the seminars. However, the focus of development is on the practical and individual implementation of seminar topics, as well as the development of independent projects.

As the field of artistic photography has no clear boundaries, it seems essential to me to address the complexity of visual language during my studies and also to develop a media competence for the effects of photography.
