Workshop-Ankündigung: CREATING REFUGE

Globally, ever more people are fleeing their homes because of war, poverty, environmental degradation, and persecution. At the same time, asylum laws in high income countries are more restrictive, border controls tighter, and attitudes towards the displaced less accommodating.
This intensive seminar focuses on the theme of ‘refuge’ and the need for sanctuary. What does refuge mean today? What has happened to a ‘culture of welcoming’? Where are people to go? How are they to live? What does it mean when people need a place of refuge but are prevented from fleeing?
Engaging with texts and interviews on forced migration, students will also participate in a sculpture workshop on the theme of ’refuge’ conducted by artist Dana van Rijssen. The sculpture workshop will provide a forum for students to work on the theme of ‘refuge’, using wood or paper, materials that, owing to their natural origins, interrogate the idea of rootedness.
The seminar is open to Masters and undergraduate students. No prior experience is required. Interested students should send an E-mail explaining their motivation and an idea for a sculpture that relates to ’refuge’. Sculpture produced in the seminar may be exhibited at a conference on ‘refuge’ organized by Academy in Exile in October 2026.
