Medienvermitteltes Sehen und bildvermitteltes Wissen sind wesentlicher Bestand der Wissenskultur in den intensiv vernetzten Informationsgesellschaften unserer Zeit, die bemüht sind, ihre zunehmende Komplexität durch Bilder unterschiedlichster Art zu verstehen, zu gestalten und zu operationalisieren. Längst hat sich das vielgestaltige ‚Paradigma Display‘ als maßgeblicher Standard für die Bildverwendung etabliert. Interaktive ‚Hyperimages‘ sind zusehends als Handlungsräume präsent. Die Interaktivität der Displays ermöglicht und fordert das Handeln mit und in Bildern. Mehr und mehr agieren wir in digitalen Bildwelten. Täglich haben wir es mit einem neuartigen Kontinuum von Visualität, wenn man die Töne hinzunimmt, sogar von Audiovisualität zu tun.
Der künstlerische Arbeitsbereich ‚Malerei, Digital & Expanded Painting arbeitet seit 2017 an einer niedrigschwelligen künstlerischen Erschließung des digitalen öffentlichen Raums für den visuellen Diskurs und die Sichtbarmachung von aktuellen Fragestellungen durch Bilder, ästhetische Objekte, die nicht zuerst als ‚Werke‘, sondern als kontingente, prozessuale Artikulation zu verstehen sind und gegebenenfalls Modifikation nachfragen. Parallel dazu bleibt wichtig, die Findung, Etablierung und Reflexion von Prozessen der Moderation auszuhandeln, um Kontexte für Einzelprojekte zu hinterfragen oder zu etablieren.

Bilder sind im Alltag längst für sehr unterschiedliche Kompetenzen, Gestaltungsinteressen und Kommunikationsbedarfe in den verschiedensten Zusammenhängen verfügbar. Die Erfahrung der „Plastizität“ digital generierter Bilder ist ein wesentliches Element unseres Umgangs mit diesen. Fertigkeiten im Sinne herkömmlich elaborierter Professionalität sind hierfür nicht mehr unbedingt die Voraussetzung. Immer wichtiger ist es allerdings, ein differenziertes Verständnis für die Bandbreite, das Funktionieren und die Eigenheiten visueller Präsenz und Sinnproduktion zu entwickeln.
Die kulturelle Eminenz bildbasierter Formate, insbesondere der Displays, verdankt sich nicht nur der technischen Entwicklung, welche es ermöglicht hat, Bildmedien als Massenmedien zu etablieren, sondern auch der besonderen Stellung des Bildes als „epistemisches Objekt“, welches in der dynamischen Verschränkung von Sensation und Signifikation unserer Gegenwart Optionen präsentiert und erschließt. Insofern entscheidet sich an der Produktion, Distribution und Moderation von Bildern, visuellen Artefakten wirklich unsere Zukunft.
Media-mediated vision and image-mediated knowledge are essential components of knowledge culture in our time's intensively networked information societies, which strive to understand, shape, and operationalize their increasing complexity through images of all kinds. The multifaceted 'display paradigm' has long since established itself as the significant standard for the use of images. Interactive 'hyperimages' are increasingly present as spaces for action. The interactivity of displays enables and demands action with and within images. We are acting more and more in digital image worlds. Every day, we are confronted with a new continuum of visuality and even audio-visuality if we add sound.
Since 2017, the artistic work area 'Painting, Digital & Expanded Painting' has been developing low-threshold artistic means to establish a digital public space for visual discourse and the visualization of current issues through images. These images, conceived as aesthetic objects, are not initially to be understood as 'works', but as a contingent, processual articulation that may even demand modification. At the same time, it remains essential to negotiate the finding, establishment, and reflection of moderation processes to question or establish contexts for individual projects.

Nowadays, it's easy to digitally generate and edit images on various end devices with the help of appropriate programs, apps, and artificial intelligence. The experience of the "plasticity" of digitally generated pictures is an essential element of our interaction with them. Elaborate skills – in a traditional understanding – as professionalism are no longer necessarily prerequisites. Images are, therefore, available in everyday life for very different skills, creative interests, and communication needs in various contexts. So, it is increasingly important to develop a differentiated understanding of the range, functioning, and peculiarities of visual presence and production of meaning.
The cultural eminence of image-based formats, especially displays, is not only due to the technical development that has made it possible to establish image media as mass media but also to the unique position of the image as an "epistemic object" that presents and opens up options in the dynamic interweaving of sensation and signification of our present. In this respect, the production, distribution, and moderation of images and visual artifacts will really determine our future.
